about

This is a tune about the unbearable loss of a relationship, of something we thought would last forever. Then there's the metaphor of the blue ocean that doesn't change through all this, connected to the idea of 'being' blue, and having the blues. It's an adaptation of a piece I wrote about the loss of so many people by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean many years ago, in this case putting that kind of loss in the context of a love relationship that dies too soon. Musically it's inspired in part by bands like Robert Glasper Experiment and artists like Rick Ross and Bilal.

lyrics

Blue as it ever was

Far gone
Words can’t get through
Words have a way of
avoiding you
The void you’re made of
A thousandth of our love’s room

It was gone before we got to
Have a feeling of ever

Too late, too soon

First off
Out of the blue
Out of the way of
What can be viewed
Or will be left of
A thousand times our love’s room

So soon gone and ever anew
In the event of never

There is no way for the sun to cry at all
Said a voice in the front room
When the seam/sea is opened
Two hundred thousand stars will vanish
In the fray/spray

No one could tell us how high the wave
If we survived at all
Since I could not shout
I stood near the spout
Where rainwater rushes out
Blue as it ever ever was
